High School Journal

A lot of people ask what a typical day is like for an Avalon student. Sometimes staff members will hem and haw a bit before giving a response. It’s not because we don’t want to answer your question, it’s just that “typical” can vary quite a bit from student to student…

Typical (more or less) High school Schedule

8:00 - School building is open for students

9:00 - School starts, students attend Advisory

9:20 - Math time; most students are in a math classroom

10:20 - Seminars or Independent Project work time

11:20 - Seminars or Independent Project work time

12:20 - Lunch

1:00 - Silent Reading Time

1:30 - Seminars or Independent Project work time

2:30 - Seminars or Independent Project work time

3:30 - Advisory time

3:40 - End of the school day

5:00 - School closes for students (4:00 PM on Fridays)

A Day in the Life - High School

This was an assigned journal topic for some students during the 2005-2006 year.

Just a note: These are “raw” writings. They are not censored or edited by the staff of Avalon School. The writings are the property of the student that wrote them, and do not reflect the opinions or views of Avalon School’s staff. Etc. Etc.

Many students do not edit or proofread the majority of their journal entries. There’s nothing inappropriate in them, but you might find a typo or two…

Journal - March 2nd, 2006

To Do List:

  1. Wakeup
  2. Lay in bed and wonder about the fate of the world…particularly as it obtains to me and finding the energy to get out of bed.
  3. Force myself out of bed because I realize I have to shower, practice, and eat breakfast.
  4. Do all of the above.
  5. Realize five minutes before I have to leave that I still need to pack a lunch or scrounge up a couple of dollars to go out.
  6. Find 34 cents in the bottom of my bag.
  7. Pack lunch.
  8. Arrive at school. (Mode of transportation may vary: bus, ride, biking, walking…)
  9. Immediately begin to feel hungry and regret eating only six bites of toast for breakfast.
  10. Advisory. Check in question: “How do you feel about toothbrushes?” Answers vary. Amazingly enough inter-galactic travel, world domination, listening to/playing music, and “Aladdin” seem to be worked into all of the answers.
  11. Math. Sit in my advisory doing math homework while everyone else shuffles off to their classes. Enjoy the relative quiet and joys of pre-calculus.
  12. Work in Library. (This would be classified as real quiet). Help any interested students find books. Point out the interesting books they might possibly find, um, interesting: Hydrobics! The Japanese-English Dictionary of Medical Terms, The Swedish-English Dictionary, something or other about the cultural history of shopping….
  13. Chemistry. What is Dean talking about? Find out soon.
  14. Lunch (finally):
    1. Wait in line for microwaves. Approx. 10 minutes
    2. Attempt to squeeze 12 people around a table that fits four. Aprox. 3 minutes of complex strategizing.
    3. Realize that I packed my lunch in about 3 minutes this morning. Pretzels and yogurt? Appetizing? Not really. Eat everyone’s food but my own. Approx. 7 minutes
    4. It’s someone’s birthday? Not a problem. Someone has a guitar! The entire cafe sings “Happy Birthday” along to guitar accompaniment. We’re enthusiastic if a bit tone deaf. Aprox. 2 minutes.
    5. Have an in-depth conversation about one or more of the following topics. (Approx. 5 min. for each topic)
      1. The State of The World
      2. Oranges
      3. The pros/cons of different types of french fries.
      4. The Olympics
      5. The manifold wonders of England
      6. Honestly, anything and everything is up for discussion…
  15. Reading time. Possibly curl up underneath my desk. Everyone is reading silently and the after lunch sleepiness starts to set in. It’s so quiet, how can my eyes not want to close?
  16. Time to work on projects. Pick from the sixty two it seems I am currently doing, preferably not one of the ones that gets me Music or Literature graduation standards. It seems a little redundant to get those for the fifth time.
  17. DTL (Daily Time Log) time. Wait in line to get my DTL signed. Realize that I forgot to add the homework I did last night to my hour total.
  18. 3:40…time to go home. Well, that is if you don’t have play practice, GSA, AAH, tech committee, Amnesty International, Environmental Committee, Yearbook Meetings….
