There are many literary awards given out each year for all kinds of genres. Every country appreciates their nation’s literature in different forms; it may be poetry, science fiction, historical fiction, picture books for children. It is always a great pride for an author or an illustrator to receive an award. Nominating a book and finally selecting it for an award is not an easy task. We at ASB were fortunate to have a visitor Dr. Nancy J. Johnson who has been on the selecting committee for a Newbery Award in 2002. She has shared with us this process. Click here to appreciate the process involved in the selection. Click below Some of the awards by the ALA are: Caldecott Medal, Newbery Medal, Batchelder Award, Pura Belpre, Medal, Carnegie Medal, Odyssey Award, Sibert Medal, and Wilder Medal. Other literary awards from other countries are Sahitya
Akademi Award, Red House Children’s , Coretta Scott King Award, Arthur Ellis
Award, Canadian Library Association for Children, National Jewish Book Award
and many, many more. Here is an interview where Artist David Wiesner speaks with AL Senior Editor Beverly Goldberg from the exhibits floor of the 2007 ALA Annual Conference in Washington, D.C., about winning his third Randolph Caldecott Medal. Grade 2 students illustrated their stories using Pixie. They did an excellent job using backgrounds, text, and graphs to create their stories. Students were able to import their voices in their story books. They had fun recording and reading their stories.
