October 22: Protest Ehud Olmert at the World Affairs Council, Union Square

Gather at SF Union Square Thursday October 22 at 6pm.

Protest Ehud Olmert, former Prime Minister of Israel on Thursday October 22 @ 6pm. We want Olmert arrested and tried for his role in the brutal attack on Gaza in December/January, as well as the attack on Lebanon in 2006.  Olmert will be appearing as a speaker for the World Affairs Council.

As Olmert  speaks in the St Francis Hotel, we will be gathered outside  on Union Square in San Francisco. We want Israel and its leaders held accountable for their crimes against the people of Palestine and Lebanon.

We support the findings of the Goldstone Report, that detail the crimes committed by Israel during its war against the whole people of Gaza of last December/January, in "Operation Cast Lead". President Obama and most politicians have simply refused to take this report seriously, some by vocally rejecting it, others by ignoring it completely.

It is therefore up to us, civil society, to again do what politicians are unwilling to do. Call for universal application of human rights and international law. This will be the message of our protest. We demand that Olmert, who initiated "Operation Cast Lead" and is directly responsible for the crimes that took place and therefore must be held accountable. Olmert is also responsible for the insane attack against Lebanon in the Summer of 2006. Olmert shares criminal responsibility for the siege on Gaza that leaves children hungry and 1.5 million people in desperate circumstances.

Please plan on being there. Please spread the word. We need to stand together to create a new reality. We will not accept that Israel may act with impunity and total disregard for human life. This protest is our opportunity to stand up and be counted.

Spread the word to your friends and all organizations that support the rule of law, human rights, and oppose militarism and occupation.  Organizations are urged to send in their endorsements.

Dr. Stephen Zunes will help answer some of these questions and give us his unique perspective on events in this vitally strategic part of the world.

Are Afghanistan and Pakistan fronts in the war on terror as the White House would have us believe or are there other factors at play here?

Are the Karzai and Zardari governments puppets of the United States or are they simply trying to control what they view as extremism in Al-Qaida and Taliban?

Is the picture much bigger than that in view of the importance of the two countries in the broader global political equation and in view of the Pakistani nuclear arsenal?

What will the outcome of Western military involvement be and where do other powers such as Russia, China, India and Iran fit in?

Dr. Zunes is Professor of Politics and International Studies at the University of San Francisco. He is the author of scores of articles for scholarly and general readership on Middle Eastern politics, U.S. foreign policy, international terrorism, nuclear non-proliferation, strategic nonviolent action, and human rights. He has been a recipient of a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship on Middle Eastern and Central Asian Studies at Dartmouth College and a Human Rights Fellowship at the Center for Law and Global Justice at the University of San Francisco.  Dr. Zunes has made frequent visits to the Middle East and other conflict regions, where he has met with top government officials, academics, journalists and opposition leaders. He is a frequent guest on National Public Radio, Pacifica Radio, PBS, BBC, MSNBC and other media outlets.

Jennifer is Palestinian. Well, Palestinian American. Or more precisely: a single, Christian, first generation, Palestinian American woman who chooses to return to her parents' hometown of Ramallah at the start of the Second Intifada.

Join her on American and Palestinian soil on auditions, bad dates, and across military checkpoints as she navigates the thorny terrain around Palestinian identity. Weaving together humor, slides, pop culture references and live theatre, Jajeh explores how she becomes Palestinian-ized, then politicized and eventually radicalized in a fresh, often funny, searingly honest way.

Action Alert: Help Needed to Support Palestinian Refugees from Iraq

Urgent Help Needed to Support Palestinians Arriving in the US from Iraq
TO ALL AL-AWDA MEMBERS AND SUPPORTERS

The US government has approved the entire population of Al-Waleed Palestinian refugee camp for resettlement as refugees in the US in the coming year. For more information see http://www.csmonitor.com/2009/0708/p02s04-usgn.html and http://english.aljazeera.net/news/middleeast/2009/06/2009618161946158577.html
The first Palestinian family of the year will be arriving next week in San Diego on Wednesday September 16, 2009. This family, as with all the refugees who will be relocated to the US from Al-Waleed, will arrive essentially with essentially nothing.
