So, how do you bring the power of this service to your own domain? Well, first you need to sign into Google Apps. If you do not have an account yet, sign up for free. (PS: click on any of the pictures shown below to increase their size).![]() Once you are logged in, Google Apps will present you with the main Dashboard. Locate the "Add more services link and click it." The resulting page should look something like this: In the "other services" area, you should see a section about "App Engine" and a little text box. Enter "aef" (this stands for App Engine Fan ;-) and hit enter: Google Apps will now display you its terms of services for the App Engine. Essentially, they need to make sure that you understand that this application is not a service provided by them and that they are not responsible if this application does anything malicious. Read their terms well and make sure that you are ok with them! The next thing is to select a subdomain that you would like to use for this service. Bear in mind that this is the "namespace" that the service uses: every new URL will have its own administrative settings and its own distinct namespace for shortcuts. In this example, we selected links.appenginefan.com. When you are done, hit the "Activate this service" button. Once the setup is complete, you will see the "aef" service in your Dashboard. You can now go to the URL that you registered (click on the green link) to "claim" your namespace: The reason this last step is necessary is that, although the service itself is now bound to your domain, the logins accepted are still regular gmail accounts. By clicking on the button, you tell the service to take this gmail account (the email address provided upon login) and make it the administrator. Once that final step is performed, you can customize your namespace and start adding links. |
