During a storm that sent large waves onto the eastern coast of Great Barrier Island in mid-March, 2005, a storm surge of unusual height was observed. The Awana Road was flooded with pure seawater at least 30cm deep. Awana, mid March, 2005- a storm surge piles up seawater across the Awana Road.
