Captain William Lancaster Dunning…significant dates and events. William Dunning was born 24 Dec 1808 in Stepney, London, England. It is very likely he arrived in Australia as crew on a ship (currently unknown) from England and did not return.
Chief Mate William Dunning was promoted to Captain on 24 Nov 1838 and sailed to Manukau Harbour in New Zealand on 12 Dec 1838 as Master of the "Bee". At some point before November, 1840, he has been living at or close to Nagle Cove, Great Barrier Island, as Lucette refers in his book to having to call in to that place on the ‘Curlew’, to pick up his (Dunning’s) ‘traps’ otherwise known as his personal effects, before departing for Tahiti. He was Master of the following vessels, ‘Bee’ ‘Curlew’, 96 tons, brig, Nov 1840 to unknown. ‘Kate’ 1841 ‘Hannah’, having been reported as lost off Kawhia NZ, she sailed into Sydney under command of Capt Dunning. on 27 Jun 1842. ‘Levin’, cutter, Mar to Jul 1843, sailing in and out of the Barrier Islands. ‘Terror’, brig, March 1844 to July 1851. ‘Earl of Hardwicke’ 1852 ‘Daniel Webster’, Aug 1853 to Jul 1855. ‘Gertrude’ June 1857 to March 1859. ‘Frowning Beauty’, July 1859. William appears on the passenger list as arriving in Sydney from Auckland on the Brig ‘Spray’ on 6 Jan 1860.
