Surfing the Great Barrier Island Coast(photos and text copied from http://www.straypossum.co.nz/activities/surfing)
When the wind swings offshore after a bit of a North Easterly blow or a large swell comes rolling in caused by activity off the coast, like a big storm on the way, the East coast beaches of The Barrier...Medlands, Kaitoke, Palmers, Awana, and Whangapoua rate amongst New Zealands best surfing destinations.
Surf conditions vary but in general Medlands and Awana attract the most attention as they are easy to get to and
can be amongst the more gentle of the breaks. ![]() Photos courtesy of the Aotea Board Riders Club and Craig McInman of Tryphena Charters. Phone 09 429 0596. Email tryphena.charters@xtra.co.nz Prints available. The short address for this site is abc.aotea.org |
