Surfing the Great Barrier Island Coast

(photos and text copied from http://www.straypossum.co.nz/activities/surfing)

When the wind swings offshore after a bit of a North Easterly blow or a large swell comes rolling in caused by activity off the coast, like a big storm on the way, the East coast beaches of The Barrier...Medlands, Kaitoke, Palmers, Awana, and Whangapoua rate amongst New Zealands best surfing destinations.

Surf conditions vary but in general Medlands and Awana attract the most attention as they are easy to get to and can be amongst the more gentle of the breaks.
Shark alley at the South end of Medlands and Palmers at the northern end of Kaitoke beach tend to be for the more experienced and when the bar at Okiwi river mouth is working it can be awesome to behold.
Feel free to give us a call or email us at Stray Possum Lodge for a surf and conditions report.
