Computer Hardware Assignments

Most assignment information can be found using the web resources on the left side of this page.

 

1.  Keep an on-line advanced hardware engineering journal using wiki spaces.  Include all following assignments in this journal.

·         6 article summaries

·         Error messages top ten list

·         Hardware website review worksheet

·         Dos commands

·         Review of new hardware product

·         Instructions Manual Information

·         Information on building a new computer with a budget of $750

·         Advanced BIOS setting information

·         Common Hardware issues list

2.  Read and study the website How PCs Work to learn the parts of

     the computer. 

 

3.  Pass the the parts of the computer test.  Know what the parts

     are and what they do.  You also need to know the acronyms.

     Fun Game.

   

4.  Research and explain the Terminology for Computer hardware and

     include the terminology in your engineering journal. Take the Quiz

 

5.  Draw and properly label what the inside of a computer looks like

     and include it in your engineering journal.

 

6.  Know and be proficient at getting into the BIOS (also known as

     set up) and the basic features of the BIOS.

 

7.  Know the ports on the computer and what they are for and pass

     the ports test.

o       Serial

o       USB

o       Parallel

o       PS/2

o       RJ45/Network

o       Modem

o       Sound

 

8.  Install a computer hard drive with the different cabling schemes.

o       1 IDE cable

o       2 IDE cables

o       SATA cable

 

9.  Properly install internal parts of computer

o       Hard Drive

o       CD/DVD ROM

o       RAM

o       Expansion Cards

o       Floppy

 

10.  Demonstrate competent knowledge of computer parts and their

     functions and pass the test. (See links above in assignment numbers

      2 and 5)

 

11.  Complete the trouble shooting exam from peers.

 

12.  Create a Start up disk that works.

o       From the OS

o       From our software

 

13.  Install an operating system from scratch

o       Wipe (know what wipe does)

o       Fdisk (Know what FDisk does)

o       Format (Know what format does)

o       Install Window OS

14.  Demonstrate proficient basic network setup ability

o       Properly plug in RJ45 into Nic and switch

o       Connect computer to switch and check for connectivity

o       Check NIC for green light

o       Verify network setting through OS

o       Know what the lights on a NIC mean

 

15.  Properly connect external components to a computer and install

       correct drivers.

o       Printer

o       Scanner

o       Digital camera/camcorder

16.  Know and demonstrate the ability to complete general computer

       maintenance.

o       Schedule and run scandisk

o       Schedule and run disk defrag.

o       Run disk cleanup

o       Check Hard drive space available (20% available for optimal use)

o       Back up files/hard drive

o       Install, update and run virus checker

o       Install, update and run spyware checker

o       Find, install land run OS updates (Windows updates)

o       Update browser

o       Check for and install patches/updates for hardware

 

17.  Teach another student to do a hardware related task.  This must

        be pre-approved by the teacher and include a basic typed

        lesson plan.  Include the lesson plan in your engineering journal.

 

18.  Create a “How To” video, podcast, webpage or other pre-

       approved choice on a topic related to computer hardware and

       post it on the Avanti hardware web site.

 

19.  Know and explain 10 basic DOS commands and include these

       commands in your engineering journal.

 

20.  Get a computer on up and running properly on the OSD network.

 

21.  Be familiar with the Window XP Operating System

22.  Research a legal or ethical issue that pertains to computing and

       write a one page paper about it and give a presentation to the

       class about this issue. (examples:  master/slave language, other)

 

23. Evaluate a computer hardware web site using the Web Page Design Evaluation Sheet.

 

24.  Read one hardware related article a week (about six articles) and

       write a half page summary about the article and post it on the

       hardware class blog or wiki.

 

25.  Contact a computer expert outside the classroom about hardware

        issues through a blog, wiki, message board or other.  Include this

        expert information in your engineering journal.

 

25.  Demonstrate excellent safety when working with computers.
