Background:
 
Shirley often teaches in new and challenging areas, and has written texts that have been influential in bringing about change, including four teaching kits, with a total of 777 pages, that were published by Educational Publications. Her book, Why Me? is a reference for Discussion Paper 35 (1994) and Report 80 (1996) People with an Intellectual Disability and the Criminal Justice System.

In 2003 Shirley’s book Investing with the Professionals: Income, Stability and Security with LICs, LPTs, ETFs and IRSs was published by Wrightbooks/John Wiley. It is based on 20 years of successful investing in ASX leading industrial stocks and talks with CEOs.
 
Her many professional articles have been published in conference papers and magazines. Her freelance writing includes travel and lifestyle articles and poetry. Publicity for Shirley’s work has involved radio inte rviews, newspaper articles, conference presentations and seminars to organizations such as Rotary, Telstra, AMP, the Australasian Institute for Banking and Finance and the Adelaide Stock Exchange.
 
At present Shirley edits proposals and develops material for Escensio – a management change and organizational design company with contracts with the Dept of Defense and the Dept. of the Attorney General. But in the late 1980s she was foundation editor of the magazine Literacy Matters and edited many fiction and non-fiction books, and anthologies of poetry and creative writing.
 

Currently Shirley lectures five courses at the ANU Centre for Continuing Education (Creative Writing, Reading Fast and Effectively, Listed Investment Companies, Wordology and The Making of English see www.anu.ed.au/cce). But she has also worked for Adelaide Uni, had contracts with many private companies and government programs with managers, long-term unemployed, the general public, people wi th disabilities, youth, migrants, ESL, Aboriginals and was once a primary school teacher.

Why Me? was written with the assistance of the National Down Syndrome Association who made a commitment to publishing. Unfortunately when the book was complete it had a cut in funding. Consequently Shirley did the publication, publicity, marketing and distribution.
