Culture, Social Customs, and Family Structure

A. Education of citizens is an important aspect in most civilizations.
How will this Utopia respond to the following issues:

1. Who will have access to education and how will they access it?
Everyone will have access to eduction, however only kids ages 6 to 18 must attend school. students will go to the education town/dome 5 days a week from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. There will be 15 weeks of break over the course of the year.

2. What will be taught and how will it be taught?
Students ages 6 to15 will be taught in math, language arts, science, P.E., social studies (on earth and Arcatia), and one of the following, art, music, biology, computer programming, health, or choir. Students ages 16-18 will choose a job that they are interested in and learn how to do that job. This schooling also known as 3rd school is very simlar to college here on earth. Every subject is taught in an environment where every student has there own personal laptop. Teachers send work to students via the internet. Each classroom has a holographic projector and an air screen which is like a smart board except the airsceern works wtih a holographic projector.

3. What is the value placed on the role of educators?
Educators are, on paper, at the same level as all other citizens. Of course, the general public knows that without educators Arcatia couldn't exsist, because of this educators are generally treated with respect.

B. How will this Utopia address the following issues regarding religion?

i. State sanctioned religion (one official religion) vs. multiple religious traditions.
The original founders of Arcatia were all Catholic. Catholism has been the only religion ever practiced, therefore it is the only known religeon. Because of this single religion society where everybody is catholic and only catholic there is no problem of multiple religous traditons.

ii. If a state sanctioned religion, what level of observance will be required? What will enforcement procedures entail?
We are all different and that means that our relationship with God is all different. The only requirement is that you attend church every Sunday. If a person doesn't attend church they are not punished but are helped in finding God.

iii. Observance of eastern and western religions as they currently exist vs. the creation of a new religion or many new religions?
New religeons are prohibited.

C. Arts and Entertainment:
Most great societies encourage the flourishing of the full range of human talents. (Note: do not address censorship in this section; see the Government section) How will this Utopia accommodate the following activities:

1. Literature (fiction, nonfiction, poetry, drama, etc.)
Literature is taught in school from age 6 to 15.There is one dome/town that is comited to literature and writing. Books are very important to every citizen.

2. Fine arts (painting, sculpture, drawing, acting, dance, etc.)
Painting and drawing is very important to Arcatia because art is used in decorating buildings. Dance and acting is also very important as it is the key form of entertainment for people. And even though the fine arts are important, the people who perform or draw are no more important than anyone else. Although they are often treated with respect.

3. Music (instrumental - classic, instrumental - contemporary, vocal, etc.)
In Arcatia music is very important, music is played everywhere. And while musicians are not more important than the rest of Arcatia they rae often given respect because of there talent.

4. Film (documentary, animation, fiction, etc.)
Film is very important to the documenting of history. In fact film is one of the four activities that does not have it's own dome/town. Those who are interested in film are divided up among the 67 domes, this ensures that every notable event is documented. And like musicians, actors, teachers and artists documenters are no more important than the rest of the society, but they are often treated with respect.

5. Sports
Members of Arcatia think that it is very important to exercise and they love playing sports, however sports are considered recreation not profession. There is not a sports dome/town and sports are not played professionally.

6. Value placed on the role of Artists and Athletes
If you asked this question to an Arcatian they would most likely answer like this. Athletes, what is an athletes? I have never heard of the term athlete. But I will say this, artists are important because they make Arcatia look good. Of course as stated above, artists are no more important than any other citizen but the arists are often given respect.

D. Food: Will this Utopia have a national dish? What will be the prevailing cultural attitude toward food? (For example, necessary evil or daily joy?)
Ugly fruit is the national dish. Arcatians love ugly fruit and if it were possible would eat it at every meal. If we were to travel to Arcatia you would be amazed at the rush of people when the ugly fruit is harvested. One writer wrote back in 2457 that he was surprised Arcatians didn't worship the ugly fruit.

E. How has your Utopia dealt with the following isues of social customs:

1. New vs. Old Holidays
New holidays are added every once in awhile, however before a holiday can be celebrated it must be aproved, For example you can not make up the holiday of machine gun day just so you can skip work and shoot machine guns. All new holidays must be G rated. Old holidays are celebrated with huge parades and often a free day off work and/or school.

2. Social Classes (Are different groups of people viewed differently?)
Yes and no, obviously the old are seen as being old and the young as young but other than this there really are no social classes. For more info see population and demographics D.

3. Notoriety, Celebrity, and Respect
In Arcatia everyone is, by law the same. Nobody is more important, nobody has a better pay, everybody is on the same field. However as I have mentioned before some people are treated with respect just because of what they give to society. Those treated with respect include teachers, artists, actors/dancers, and government leaders.

4. Life goals, Hopes, and Dreams
Life goals can be achieved in many ways. For example if you want to be a teacher nothing can stop you from doing that. If your goal involves going to planet Aheuer (ah-er-yu) then the government wants to get you there. The government promotes dreams and loves seeing them fulfilled. They believe that fulfilling dreams lessons the risk of someone rebelling.

F. How are families structured in your Utopia? (Is there a concept of marriage? How do children interact with their parents?)
Yes, family is very important to Arcatians, there is no law on how few or many children a family can have but most families have between 2 and 4 children. When raising children Arcatins know that many mistakes can be made, so before a couple can have kids they must attend a class on raising kids. (This class is usually 6 months long and is attended during the pregnancy. In the family parents should be treated with repect, however if the child does not respect his/her parents the punishment is left up to the parents. (For info on marriage see how men and women relate to one another.) When a person turns 18 they are given a home in the dome where their profession is housed, the person is no longer in the care of their parents and is free to do whatever they want as long as it is within the law.
G. How do men and women relate to one another?
Once a  man/woman turms 18 they are free to do whatever they like, this includes getting married and sex. There is one rule for marriage: Before getting married a couple must pass a

compatibility test. This ensures that the fewest number of marriages end in divorce. Once a couple is married they receive there own house, if the husband and wife work in the same dome/town then the home is in that dome/town, but if they work in 2 different domes/towns then the couple can choose which dome/town would best fit there needs and live there.

Pre-marital sex is prohibited, however if it occurs and a baby is conceived then the couple can choose between getting married, or letting another couple adopt the baby. Sex after marriage is not prohibited.
