Seven Commandments of Risker Island:
- All people are free to do as they want as they want as long as no one is intentionally harmed.
- All deaths not due to nature are considered a crime until properly judged.
- Every citizen deserves the right to prove themselves innocent if accused guilty.
- Everyone must enjoy the excitement of danger.
- Murder is not considered dangerous but a wrong/bad deed.
- No one should be judged by their religion, ethnicity, skin color, or gender.
- No one is to ever have complete control of Risker Island (dictatorship). Risker Island is to stay as a democracy forever.
A. Describe and, if possible, name the informing political philosophy of this Utopia (for example, Democracy, Monarchy, etc.)
Democracy: All citizens take part in deciding events and final decisions that occur on Risker Island. This would include the annual sport face-off. This is the decision for the sport that will be held as a competition to present someone with the title of "Risker Island Champ of Sport." Everyone has the right to vote as long as they are at least the age 10. No one is required to vote but if they want their thoughts and concerns to be part of the final decision they should vote. Our democracy is based from the democracy of the United States with some changes to encourage Risker Island's motto, "Where danger is welcome rather than avoided." For example, instead of having a president we have an "orgatherer" who is someone that tallies the votes of all the elections that take place. This way, every decision for Risker Island is accurate in including all the thoughts of the citizens who had voted. The money that the government earns is also in the hands of the citizens of Risker Island. In other words, the citizens of Risker Island can decide what they want to do with the money. Considering the fact that all the citizens of Risker Island enjoy the excitement of danger, on most occasions, this money is set forth in that direction. Overall, in comparison of the United States government, on Risker Island, the citizens have much more control of its decisions and money. C. Describe the level of participation (do you do them) and how they are accomplished for the following governmental activities:
i. Choosing/removing leaders
Being a democracy, any citizen who wants to, gets to vote and take part in the decision of who either gets to be leader or who is removed from being a leader. The majority of the citizens get their opinion put into reality. ii. Creating/changing laws
On Risker Island, we try to make it so that everyone gets the chance to take part in anything that will affect them. This nation-wide thought has affected the way Risker Island creates and changes its laws. Any citizen of Risker Island can suggest a new law or a revision of a law. They can do this by writing their request on a piece paper that is then turned into a bucket called, "The Requester" at the Capitol building. An elected group of citizens of Risker Island then view these requests and set up a voting day so that a decision could be made for whether a law should be passed or revised or not. D. What are the “checks” on governmental power, if any?
On Risker Island, government is always considered as "all the citizens of Risker Island." In other words, the citizens of Risker Island are really the government. The elected people are really just the hands and feet of the citizens of Risker Island and also the organizers. Without the sense or thought of one leader, rather as everyone being the leader of Risker Island, there aren't really problems with the government. If anyone feels the need for power over Risker Island and pushes it too far, there will be proper judging to prove whether one is guilty or not. If proven guilty they will be sent away to a different country. Risker Island also doesn't have too many problems with the "hands and feet of the government" or, the elected helpers to carry out the needs of a government trying to gain too much power because the citizens of Risker Island usually votes them out of office before they get out of hand.
E. How does this government support or suppress the expression of individual ideas?
Refer to question C ii to see how Risker Island deals with individual ideas.
F. What are the methods and means of law enforcement and military operations (both peace keeping and war making):
The law is enforced by the police that work for the government. One can become a police through testing of their physical and mental skills. There are only 100 police maintained throughout the whole year. The citizens of Risker Island believe that a limited amount of police are needed to enforce laws because each person is in charge of themselves and their actions and being responsible people, the citizens of Risker Island can choose their path of life without making too many wrong turns.
Risker Island also has a military and army to protect themselves from other countries that might not have Risker Island on their good side. Being in the army or military is like being a police because one is tested both physically and mentally but the top 300 get to be in the army or military. Risker Island kind of has a conceited attitude which explains why we have more army and military members than police. Risker Island has more trust in its citizens than other countries. 1. At the local level?
In every "divdan" or what is known as "state" in the United States there are about five police. Of course, being only 5,500 square miles big, each divdan of Risker Island is smaller than the states of the United States.
2. At the national level?
There are 100 police year round and 300 army and military members year round.
3. At the international (or global) level?
The police, military and army members all meet with others in the same occupation as them in other countries three times a year so that they can trade teaching techniques and good ways of staying fit. They can also discuss occurrences to watch out for things that have happened in some countries and not yet in others. Overall they exchange thoughts and knowledge in these meetings that occur in many different countries.
The 300 military and army members of Risker Island work as a united team so that they can be strong as a group to fight whenever there is an attack for whatever reason.
G. What type, if any, of diplomacy (working with other countries without violence) will this Utopia use?
Risker Island has many other countries that it works with. It has made many friends since many of them have helped them get up on their feet at the start of the society. In other words, many of the countries that Risker Island has a friendship with had started from them giving Risker Island a helping hand when Risker Island had just broken off of the United States to start a society based on danger. Risker Island trades food, clothing, shoes, hair products, and almost anything with these countries, sometimes gaining money from the trade. Overall, Risker Island interacts with many countries without violence a lot. In fact, there is rarely an occasion where there is violence
H. What type, if any, currency will this Utopia use?
The currency on Risker Island has all the same measurements as the money of the United States except the names have changed:
Instead of the dollar it is called the "mon4cit" - $1. This means that the 2, 5, 10, 50, and 100 dollar bills are called mon4cit bills.
How the money looks is also different from the money in the United States. There aren't any faces on the money because Risker Island doesn't want to show any signs of favoritism.
