Pascopolis is located on an island about 30 miles off the coast of Costa Rica.  The island has a tropical/subtropical climate.  Citrus trees are abundant.  It is semi-mountainous.  Many rivers flow through this island, and lakes are plentiful.  Over have of the island is covered in forest.

B. What natural resources, if any, are available? How will they be used?

Over half of the island is covered in forest.  Trees are cut down in moderation to be used for building.  The citrus trees are used for food.  Lots of fish are available to be used for food as well.  Pineapples and bananas are abundant.

C. Is the climate suitable for agriculture? If so, what crops will be cultivated? Please make reference to population statistics for feasibility calculation.

The climate is suitable for the growing of some crops, such as rice and sugar.  As it is a tropical/subtropical climate, many kinds of citrus fruits, as well as vegetables are grown.

D. How are jobs determined? What percentage of the workforce is dedicated to the survival and growth of the Utopia?

Members of the society choose/are assigned a job based on their strengths.  The person is closely watched up until the time his/her job is determined.  Then, the person consults with the Job Specialty Committee, and together, based on their strengths, their likes and their plans for the future, they determine a job that is perfect for that person.

Possible jobs include:

  • Educators
  • Medical Workers
    • Doctors/nurses
  • Storage Workers (Since not many people are interested in being a Storage Worker, people are asked to sign up to work once a week in the storage rooms.  People who sign up are rewarded.)
  • Government Workers (an elected position)
  • Librarians

E. Is this Utopia notable for any particular crop (e.g. silk, kiwi fruit) or industry (e.g. postage stamps, fine furniture)?

Pascopolis is not internationally noted for any crop, but it does grow and is successful in growing many kinds of citrus fruits, which grow well in this subtropical climate.

F. What, if anything, is imported? From whom?

In the beginning of this society, many things, such as food and clothing, were imported from the United States.  As the society grew, however, it became more and more independent, and relied on the United States for less.  They grew their own grains, fruits and vegetables, and made their own clothing.  (Cloth was imported from the United States.)  Books are imported from all over the world.

G. What, if anything, is exported? To whom?

Pascopolis exports some of its fruits to neighboring countries, but that is it.
