It kind of underlined the fact that technology is a huge part of the people's lives. It was written in the future, after a breakthrough of technology.

It might have been, because it was all about forgetting about books and learning to have fun, blowing off an education to go joyriding, It might have been, but I don't really know much about the time period it was written in.

I think that maybe because while the author was writing there was Desert Storm and maybe she wanted to create a utopia or safe place to escape into.

Since We by Yevgeny Zamyatin took place in the early 2100s, the technology was really advanced. Everything in the city was made from glass, but if it was in the 1800s or 1900s, that couldn't happen. Also, they had the INTEGRAL, which was the basis for their whole life. The schedule, their names, and anything they did was based off of the INTEGRAL. If it wasn't in the 2100s, nobody would even be able to create the INTEGRAL, let alone make it work. The whole entire society was created because of the time of the society and if it was created at a earlier or later time, the whole entire society would be different. If it was created earlier, then there wouldn't be as much technology, but if it was made later, then there would be more.
