Julian West stays happy in the world in the 20th century because he adapts, and learns to live with it. He also ends up liking Edith Leete, so that's how he ends up happy.

The people who were in good places because of the way the world was were happy, blissfully unaware of the Reeks and Wrecks. But some of them knew what went on on the other side of the river, and they saw how unhappy the average people were.

They were unaware of everything bad that was happening. If they knew, then they might have rebelled.

They were basically brainwashed, so they were "programmed" to be happy. Therefore, the happiness is not real. If they were actually aware of what is going on, they would not be happy. The book is "We"

The Giver~
They weren't necessarily happy. Everybody was either sad or satisfied. Only Jonas felt sad, for he had feelings, the other people were not happy. If they were "happy..." they really weren't happy because they were probably forced to be happy or be released.

In Fahrenheit 451 not everyone was happy they just put on an act of happiness in order to fit in with everyone. For example Mildred (Guy's wife) didn't seem all that happy but she still said she was.
