| A. How is your Utopia a reaction to the utopia that you read about in your independent novel? "The Giver" gave me lots of inspiring ideas that truly effected how I created my ideas. Though, I think it some instances, the ideas were so strong that I almost was stuck on them. I couldn't think of my own ideas because I was too focused on the idea of "The Giver" novel. But, some inspirational ideas I received from it were to have one special job in my society. In the book's society, they had the memory keeper. In my society, I have the watchful eye, whose job it is to watch over the behavior of the society. Ideas I also got from "The Giver" were to not have a birthday be more meaningful. For example, you get a bike when you turn 9 in the giver and are assigned a job when you are 12. In my society, at 16 you are assigned a job and at 12, you stop going to school. In many ways, "The Giver" got my brain into the idea of creating Utopias, and it was very helpful. But in other ways, I think it distracted me from being able to come up with my own ideas. B. What historical precedents (or from other works of fiction) have influenced your Utopian ideas? While creating my Utopia, a lot of my aspects were influenced by the book "1984." In many ways, I took ideas from this distopia, and changed them so they would create a Utopia. In my society, I took the idea of Big Brother, and created a watchful idea. This person is the idea of disipline. They watch citizens behavior and assign consequences. Although, they are not as strict as Big Brother, they aren't listening to every conversation all the time. Having read the distopia of "1984," I was able to make wiser decisions while creating my Utopia. In my society, our main goal is to keep the members of our society safe. In the society I am living in, there is a lot of danger all around. Everyone is always worried about keeping safe. So, in my Utopia, what is elimianted is the worry of having to be safe all of the time. For example, we are all worried about terrorist attack and war. In my society, the reason we created it was because of a massive nuclear war. So, in my utopia, we won't have the threat of nuclear wars, and the scare of danger. |
